Instead, Black Adam looks to be an origin story for the character, and his introduction is also accompanied by the introduction of the Justice Society of America. Further, the movie is seemingly connected to the extended DCEU as its inclusion of Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller would suggest. But while it looks to be an original adaptation, it seems as if Pierce Brosnan’s Dr. Fate will attack someone or something using a move that fans will surely recognize if they had spent any time playing as or against him in Injustice 2.

As spotted by Twitter user senhordestinobr, the Dr. Fates from both Black Adam and Injustice 2 can be seen suspended midair, conjuring a massive, glowing ankh and hurling it downward. Black Adam’s Dr. Fate hurls the ankh at something out of frame, and it is impossible to tell what it is intended to strike as a result. Rather, Injustice 2’s Dr. Fate can be seen hurling it downward to strike Superman as part of his throw animation. These clips are compared directly by senhordestinobr, and are nearly one-to-one in their similarity.
This is not the first time an adaptation has taken inspiration from another in games, and it will certainly not be the last. For example, MCU blockbuster Spider-Man: No Way Home took inspiration from Marvel’s Spider-Man with one of its moves in a climactic fight sequence. Because of how many seminal iterations there are of contemporary superhero characters, it is terrific to see inspiration be pulled from each medium, especially if the result is as cinematic as Dr. Fate’s grab animation is.
Either way, it is satisfying to see a move from Injustice 2 added to the movie, even if it was not implemented as an intentional influence. Once the movie releases next month, it will be interesting to see if any other moves and attacks draw from either Injustice or Injustice 2, since Black Adam does feature in both of NetherRealm’s Injustice installments and could therefore offer a wealth of combat inspiration.
Black Adam is scheduled to premiere in theaters on October 21.
