In BioWare’s mind, the free-to-play model involves an unknown quantity — an MMO that gamers are unsure of, but would still be willing to check out. Yes, highly touted titles like DC Universe Online have reverted to the free-to-play model out of desperation for users, but, those titles that release as free-to-play from the start are trying to entice gamers with something new. To warrant a premium subscription model, BioWare feels that a title needs to exceed expectations....

Certainly one of the more non-traditional paths to studio inception, Muzyka and Zeschuk founded BioWare together (along with Augustine Yip) after earning medical degrees at the University of Alberta. It’s only appropriate, if rare, then, that the two would decide to step down together as well - and indeed they released dual parting letters on the BioWare website today outlining the reasons for their departure. According to Ray Muzyka, the decision to leave BioWare didn’t come easy....

Some of the derailing issues however, have kept rearing their ugly head as the launch hasn’t been 100% smooth. Long server lines have forced BioWare to rethink its server strategy as players scramble to find a playable option. Also a major hindrance is the registration code fiasco, blocking some players from even playing the game, let alone on a congested and overloaded server. While the registration code issue is still unresolved and bound to leave gamers looking to pull the ears of a few gundarks, BioWare has launched some new servers to offload some of those under a heavier user assault, and have identified that most of the offending servers were the earliest ones launched – not surprising that gamers have yet to make the switch since characters cannot be transitioned from one server to another....

But now that The Old Republic has a firm release date — a.k.a. gamers know it isn’t just a pipe dream — BioWare can begin talking about the nitty gritty of the MMO experience. What exactly this customer service center will be responsible for, whether it be simply a call center for subscribers or a monitoring center for bugs and glitches, we can’t say, but 400 employees are clearly going to be might busy over the holidays....
